John Muir's Birthplace

John Muir's life and work has inspired people all over the world. Now the Dunbar birthplace of the pioneering conservationist has been transformed into a new visitor attraction. The stunning interpretative centre highlights the work and achievements of this remarkable man.

Born in Dunbar in 1838, John Muir emigrated with his parents to the United States where he campaigned for the preservation of natural environments through his work as an environmentalist, geologist and botanist.

Prestongrange Heritage Centre

Prestongrange is a site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution.It was the location of a sixteenth century harbour, a seventeenth century glass works, eighteenth and nineteenth century potteries and a nineteenth/twentieth century coal mine and brick works. Remnants of these former industries can still be seen, and many of the structures are still intact including the rare Hoffman Kiln built in 1937 and the Cornish Beam Engine, unique in Scotland as it the only beam engine still on the site where it worked.

Opening Hours:
The museum site is open to the public all day, throughout the year.
The Visitor Centre and exhibitions are open seasonally from the 1st April to the 31st October.

Dunbar Town House

The historic Dunbar Town House was built around the end of the 16th century. After 400 years of use it is now home to a local history centre, as well as temporary exhibitions about Dunbar and surrounding district. Find out about the town and its people, past and present, from ten thousand years ago to the present day.

A display of photographs of old Dunbar and its surrounding area, brought together by Dunbar and District History Society, gives a fascinating insight into the Royal Burgh's past.

The John Gray Centre

The John Gray Centre is a new heritage centre which will be opening in early 2012. It will house the Haddington branch library, the East Lothian local history centre, a museum and exhibition space, and the East Lothian archives. The Centre will be in converted listed buildings on Lodge Street in Haddington – if you're in Haddington regularly, you'll have seen the scaffolding as the building work progresses. The centre is due to open in 2012.
